Day 5 - Haleakala Crater

Day 5 - Friday, September 3 - Today we explored basically the only remaining place on Maui that we had not seen - Haleakala Crater.  From the outside the crater looks like just another mountain or inactive volcano. But, don't be fooled the walls of Haleakala Crater hide some of the most beautiful landscape on the whole island. From the top of the crater we were above the clouds and could see all of central and west Maui.

After driving up the windy road to the 10,000 foot summit, we explored the enormous crater by horseback.  Our horses Sully and Lucy took us on a two hour horseback ride down to the crater floor (elevation 7500 feet) and then two hours back up. It's unbelievable to be not only above the clouds, but so close to the vents where volcanic ash and lava once spewed thousands of feet into the air.  The lava that shot out of these seven vents created some of the most dramatic and beautiful shoreline along the Hana Highway which we saw yesterday.
