Day 3 - Wednesday, September 1 - We hit the Road to Hana bright and early with all intentions of getting there around lunch time. Our first stop along the way - a spot with 4 waterfalls - proved to be a treacherous, bamboo-maze of a bust and we weren't willing to risk it. So after seeing just one small waterfall we turned and headed back to our car.
Our next stop was a beautiful botanical garden called the Garden of Eden which also included a peek at a spot featured in Jurassic Park. Entering the gardens we were warned to skip what we planned to be our next two stops...two more waterfalls. Rescuers had been at the site twice in the last month to pull out fall victims. This wasn't going well...but the gardens more than made up for it as they had some of the most gorgeous flowers and views of the ocean I've ever seen. Take a look:
Around 10:15 we left the garden only to come to an immediate stop behind a long line of traffic - everyone hoping to get to Hana. A police officer passed shortly after and told us a power line was down and the road would be closed indefinitely. And hence we hit the Road to Hana Roadblock. Not willing to waste away our vacation sitting in a traffic jam we made a u-turn.
We decided to explore South Maui which we were planning to do Thursday and give Hana another try Thursday. Besides a few nice beaches and the awesome road side stand "Makena Grill," South Maui honestly didn't impress. On the way back to our hotel we stopped at one of the beaches literally a stone's throw off the highway where we watched some kids surfing.
Stay tuned...as we give Hana one more try.
